The Boulevardier, a simple cocktail with bourbon, four other ingredients, and ice, has recently become a crowd pleaser. This drink hits the spot for lazy mixologists because it can be prepared in a matter of minutes with common ingredients and requires no complicated barware.

The Boulevardier: What’s It All About?

A Boulevardier is essentially a Negroni made with whiskey instead of gin. This traditional drink is actually quite complex.

This is a Negroni for adults. It was with some irony that Daryl said this after taking his first sip of a Boulevardier. After all, the Italian Negroni is hardly a juvenile beverage. Perhaps he could label it as a “Doctor” Negroni.

The Boulevardier is similar to its herbaceous cocktail relative from across the pond, but the substitution of bourbon for gin elevates it to a higher level of sophistication. The fruity bitterness of Campari is balanced by the smoothness of bourbon’s vanilla and caramel notes, making for an incredibly drinkable and complex cocktail.

A Brief Overview of the Boulevardier’s Past

The Boulevardier is a cocktail that shares some similarities with the Negroni but has a history that does not begin in either Italy or the United States. Instead, the bourbon cocktail was invented in Paris during the Roaring Twenties at a bar called Harry’s Bar (no relation to the famous Harry’s Bar in Venice).

Legend has it that Erskine Gwynne, a customer, and bar owner Harry MacElhone worked together to invent the Boulevardier. Moreover, what does the name mean? Prior to its cancellation in 1932, Gwynne published a magazine under the dual-purpose moniker Boulevardier.

The original classic cocktail is rapidly approaching its centennial birthday. The Boulevardier is here to stay as long as bourbon drinkers like us keep learning about it.
