On Sunday, a sheriff’s official in Nevada County, California, announced that a vehicle had been discovered in Prosser Lake, which is close to the last known location of missing teen Kiely Rodni.
On Sunday, a private group of divers called Adventures With Purpose announced that they had made the discovery in a lake about 35 miles west of Reno, Nevada.
Investigators are currently at the scene of the find, according to Nevada County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Andrew Trygg, looking into whether or not the car is the one driven by Rodni.
Unverified reports of human remains were found in the car, he said.
Private dive group Adventures With Purpose released a statement claiming to have located a vehicle and human remains in the water.
Questions about the team’s certainty that their discovery is related to the missing person case went unanswered for the time being.
The team reported that they located the object in water 14 feet deep. About 300 yards from the campground, Doug Bishop of Adventures With Purpose said, sonar imaging technology was used to make the discovery.
The 2013 Honda CR-V that police believed Rodni was driving has been reported stolen.
Authorities have been looking into the possibility of an abduction after Rodni and her car vanished from a party near the Prosser Family Campground on August 6. They have repeatedly mentioned the presence of young people at the party.
More than two weeks were spent searching for Rodni, with a helicopter flying over an 80-mile radius, a dive team from the neighboring Placer County Sheriff’s Office searching the lake Thursday, and a compliance sweep of locals with sex-related convictions (which in California can include indecent exposure during public urination) on Thursday.
After assisting in the search and reporting their discovery on Friday, Adventures With Purpose.
The teen, 16 at the time, was reported missing on August 6 near the campground north of Truckee, California after she had attended an outdoor party with more than a hundred people.
The campsite is located on a narrow peninsula that is surrounded on three sides by water.
On Saturday, Rodni’s family issued a statement saying they wanted some privacy.
We need a private and quiet space to begin healing and secure our footing before stepping into tomorrow as we remind one another to breathe deeply and focus on our own self-care, it said.
There was more to the statement: “When you return, we’ll throw a party to restore the peace in our relationship. We will always and forever love you, Kiely.”
