According to Albert Pujols, he plans to retire even though he won’t hit 700 home runs this season

On Saturday, Albert Pujols reached a new milestone in his career by passing Stan Musial for second all-time in total bases.

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols, now 42 years old and experiencing a career renaissance, is also on the cusp of baseball immortality.

With the month of August coming to a close, Pujols is within striking distance of career home run number 700. The Cardinals have only 43 games left this season, and the three-time MVP has said all along that next year will be his last.

The rumors of Pujols possibly returning for another season were put to rest once and for all over the weekend. When asked by Bob Nightengale of USA Today if he would change his mind about retiring at the end of the year if he hit home run No. 700, Pujols said it wouldn’t.

Whether Pujols hits 693, 696, or 700 home runs is irrelevant to his decision to retire. “I’m not someone who gets hung up on statistics. If you had told me 22 years ago that I’d be this close, I would have called you crazy. What a fantastic career I’ve had.”

This past Saturday, Albert Pujols moved into second place all-time in Cardinals history in career total bases, surpassing Stan Musial (6,143). With 6,856 RBIs, Hank Aaron is still the all-time leader.

For Pujols to pass Alex Rodriguez (696) for fourth place on the all-time home run list, he needs to hit five more home runs than Rodriguez has.

The 11-time All-Star has a.297/.375/.543 slash line with 13 homers and 37 RBI in 102 games.
