Sprinter, which runs on gasoline, is also in jeopardy.
Later in 2019, the Mercedes-Benz Metris will no longer be offered in the United States. The four-cylinder engine it uses is being phased out of production, and along with it will go the low-selling van.
A new report from Automotive News claims that the Metris isn’t the only model to suffer as a result of this decision. The larger Sprinter van in the lineup shares the engine, but this particular model isn’t going away anytime soon. Mercedes’ Sprinter, a fuel-efficient commercial van, will continue to be offered for sale. The publication was able to get its hands on the dealer memo explaining the alterations.
Motor1.com contacted Mercedes-Benz to inquire about the authenticity of the memo. In the event that we receive a response, we will be sure to include it in the story.
In the United States, the Metris was never a top seller because smaller rivals such as the Ford Transit Connect did so much better. In some international markets, Mercedes sells the Metris as the Vito.
In 2015, the Metris was introduced to customers in the United States. For 2021, the mid-size van got a new nine-speed automatic transmission to go with the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. To increase its marketability, Mercedes offered two wheelbase options for the 208-horsepower (152-kilowatt) van and a more comprehensive set of standard features. However, as the company moves toward an electric future, these features will be phased out.
More Motor Vehicles No Longer in Production:
The new, fully electric eSprinter is already in the planning stages at the company. There is a dearth of information about the EV, but the company has announced that it will sell three distinct battery packs.
While crossovers and SUVs have drawn more buyers away from vans, vans still serve an important purpose for organizations such as schools, hospitals, government agencies, and other organizations that don’t require the capability of a pickup truck. They are also very good at making camper vans, which have become increasingly popular in recent years.
