Linebacker Roquan Smith’s refusal to practice appeared to irk Bears head coach Matt Eberflus on the same day that Chargers head coach Brandon Staley approached safety Derwin James in a different way.

The ultimate aim for both James and the Chargers, according to Staley, is to get James on the field this season with a deal that everyone feels is fair. Staley said he’s fine with James continuing to skip practice as he negotiates a new contract.

There is no doubt that James and Staley will be able to cooperate moving forward, despite the fact that the conflict between Smith and the Bears seems tough to overcome.
