In 2000, Brian Daboll began his career in the National Football League when he accepted a position as a defensive assistant with the New England Patriots. Since then, he has developed significantly.

Tonight, in one of two NFL preseason games, Daboll will lead his team for the first time as head coach when the Giants take on the Patriots in Foxborough.

“My wife brought it up to me the last couple of days,” Daboll said, according to Tom Rock of Newsday. The thought crossed my mind, and I thought, “That’s pretty cool. I’d be pumped regardless of the opponent, but it’s a nice circle to complete after 22 years by playing the team that gave me my first shot at professional sports.

While the preseason result won’t affect his coaching record, Daboll is just as pumped for tonight’s game as he was for the Hall of Fame Game in 2000 between the Patriots and the 49ers.

When asked how he felt about taking the field for the first time in his new role as head coach, Daboll replied, “I can’t tell you the feeling I’ll have.” To say I’m thankful would be an understatement. Eventually, I’ll realize it. I’m not sure if we should be playing the national anthem or doing pregame stretching. But I’m doing what I can to lead this group and doing what I have to do. This isn’t something I’m treating casually. With the help of many others, I am constantly expanding my knowledge and doing my best to become a more effective leader. Absolutely, that’s going to be a priceless keepsake.

After two seasons with the Patriots, Daboll moved on to the Jets, then the Browns, the Dolphins, the Chiefs, and finally back to the Patriots, where he served as offensive coordinator until 2017. He has since spent the past four seasons as an assistant with the Bills.

Daboll expressed gratitude to Bill Belichick, the Kraft family, and the team for the opportunity. “My wife and I spent many happy years in Foxborough, and we have many fond memories of the town.”
