Under the new regulations, schools are also relieved of the obligation to implement “test-to-stay” policies or cohort students, the latter of which involves keeping students in the same group throughout the day.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned that widespread testing “might not be cost-effective in general community settings, especially if COVID-19 prevalence is low” in a report released alongside the recommendations.
Students who have been exposed to the virus now follow the same recommendations for adults whether or not they have been vaccinated: Put on a good mask for 10 days, and if you start to feel sick, get checked out by day 5 at the latest.
People in high-risk congregate settings like prisons, homeless shelters, and nursing homes are the only ones who should be quarantined at this time.
The CDC is making the change because it wants to lessen the effects of COVID-19. There is still a pandemic going on, but many people in the United States have stopped taking precautions like wearing masks and say they want life to go back to normal.
Despite the availability of vaccines and treatments, the number of coronavirus cases, deaths, and hospitalizations continue to rise.
In addition, a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association found an increase in coronavirus cases in children. It was reported last week that nearly 97,000 new infections were found in children. That’s the fourth week in a row where the number of reported cases has risen.
Most notably, the agency has not changed its masking recommendations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now advises that nearly all Americans wear masks indoors.
