Ford recalled 184,698 F-150 pickup trucks from the 2021 and 2022 model years in December 2021 due to a problem that might result in the driveshaft fracturing. Underbody heat and noise insulators might not have been correctly secured to the body, which might cause them to “may loosen and contact the aluminum driveshaft,” cutting it in a way that might cause a fracture. Only Crew Cab four-wheel-drive cars with a 145-inch wheelbase and the 302A equipment group and higher, which has the problematic sound insulation package, were included in that demographic. It appears that more F-150s are impacted. Ford is recalling 58,203 additional pickups that were “never designed nor intended to be constructed,” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The insulation appears to have been added to a small number of trucks that were not equipped with the necessary packages, extending the list of included trims to models like the two-wheel-drive Regular Cab. Ford informed Cars.com that it thinks only 3% of the people subject to the current recall are affected. The questioned samples were produced at two different plants: the Dearborn Truck facility from January 22, 2020 to November 2, 2021; and the Kansas City Assembly plant from June 1, 2020 to October 15, 2021.

In the initial recall statement, Ford listed rattling, clicking, or clunking noises coming from underneath the car as potential indicators, as well as loose or dangling underbody insulators. If the vehicle is impacted, it might also be possible to observe the scoring. Ford claims that it is still not aware of any incidents involving crashes or injuries.

Owners will start receiving notices from Ford on September 5, 2022. The solution is to visit the dealer, where a technician will examine and fix the driveshaft as required. There hasn’t been any information shared concerning taking away the insulators, despite the fact that this population wasn’t intended to be constructed with them. They will be securely fastened. Ford can be reached at 866-436-7332, and owners with inquiries should reference recall 21S53. In addition, they can call the NHTSA’s hotline for auto safety at 888-327-4236 and mention campaign number 22V623 or go to the NHTSA website’s recall page.
