Family members of Ioane “John” King, who played the gladiator Rhaskos on Starz’s “Spartacus,” announced his death on Facebook. He was 49.

From 2010 to 2013, he played the title role in the hit series “Spartacus,” and he returned to the role for the prequel miniseries “Spartacus: Stars of the Arena.” Spartacus’ transformation from Roman gladiator to revolt leader is the subject of Stephen S. DeKnight’s series.

According to a Facebook post, his loved ones said he “passed in the company of loving friends and family.”

A wonderful husband, father, son, brother, friend, and human being, John leaves a huge void in our lives, the post continued. Those of us who were fortunate enough to have known him will ensure that his acts of generosity, positive influence, hard work, and love are not forgotten.

Before beginning chemotherapy in March, the actor revealed in January that he had been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma cancer, which had spread to his pancreas and other organs. Six weeks after he and his wife Christelle moved into a new home, he received his terminal diagnosis, according to a fundraising page set up by his family.

Manu Bennett, who played his character Crixus in “Spartacus,” paid tribute to King on Instagram.

Despite his long struggle with cancer, “John faced that fight with dignity and a constant resolve not to be defeated,” as the post’s opening lines put it. “John was originally hired as an extra for Spartacus, but he impressed the cast and crew so much that they gave him the speaking role of Rhaskos. Fans may recall Rhaskos as the man at the helm of the defiant gladiator song “My cock rages on!””

After that, he said, “I remember John most fondly for his huge grin and sparkle in his eye when he would welcome me and others onto set each day offering the Gladiatorial forearm handshake and acknowledging in his deep raspy voice, ‘Brother!'”

About ten years have passed since the death of Andy Whitfield, who starred as “Spartacus,” from non-Hodgkin lymphoma at the age of 39, the same disease that took the life of Stephen King.

There was reportedly a funeral on Friday in Auckland, as reported by the Daily Mail.
