On Sunday, Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) condemned Republican calls to defund the FBI and said that the agency’s raid on former president Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate was “extreme” and unnecessary.

The former Navy Seal and current Texas congressman told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday’s “State of the Union” that it’s “hard to justify” the DOJ’s decision to obtain a warrant to search the former president’s home for classified documents. Crenshaw also said that law enforcement wasn’t necessary if they had found “ways to resolve” the allegations that Trump improperly kept classified material at his home and resort. However, the Republican from Texas distanced himself from some GOP rhetoric on the raid, labeling it “crazy.”

When Tapper asked Crenshaw about statements made by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and New York Republican congressional candidate Carl Paladino, Crenshaw said, “Oh yes, it’s crazy.”

Following the Mar-a-Lago raid, Greene has called for the FBI to be defunded, and Paladino has said that Attorney General Merrick Garland “probably should be executed” on a New York radio station. After the fact, Paladino claimed he was just being “facetious.”

So, “it makes us seem like extreme Democrats, right?” This is what Crenshaw said in a Sunday interview. Marjorie and AOC are welcome to join the defund the police club if they wish. Republicans don’t agree with you 99 percent of the time.

According to the Republican from Texas, “it is not those criticisms that lead to a crazy person attacking an FBI [building]” despite the fact that most Republicans are criticizing the FBI and DOJ.

Crenshaw was alluding to the armed man who, in the days after the Mar-a-Lago raid, attempted to break into the FBI’s Cincinnati field office.

Additionally, the FBI has recently arrested a Pennsylvania man who allegedly threatened to kill FBI agents.

Crenshaw said of the extreme rhetoric and violent actions that followed the raid, “That’s completely wrong, but that’s not where 99% of Republicans are at, of course.”
