Mercury’s star Skylar Diggins-Smith has to miss the final two games of the regular season due to playoff push

Mercury star Skylar Diggins-Smith has been sidelined due to injury, but the regional team is still in contention.

The Phoenix Mercury, who have already spent the entire season without one perennial All-Star and have since lost another, will have to play the final few games of the season without a third in order to make the playoffs.

Skylar Diggins-Smith will miss the final two games of the regular season for the Mercury, the team announced on Thursday. The club has declared its intent to finalize the signing of a substitute player by Thursday night so that he can join the squad for Friday’s game.

In her third season with the Suns, Diggins-Smith is currently averaging 19.7 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.0 rebounds per game.

This is a huge blow to a club that has been struggling all season without Brittney Griner and since bought out Tina Charles. After a quad injury forced Diana Taurasi to miss the rest of the season, the Mercury were already shorthanded.

As the season progresses, the WNBA playoff prospects for the Mercury diminish further.

The Mercury share seventh place in the WNBA with the Minnesota Lynx, Atlanta Dream, and New York Liberty, all with a record of 14-20. Even more daunting, at 13-21, are the Los Angeles Sparks.

The Mercury will need to complete the season with victories over Dallas Wings and Chicago Sky if they want to make the playoffs for the tenth year in a row. With a poorer record against teams above.500, including a 1-2 record against the Dream, an 0-4 record against the Lynx, and a 2-2 record against the Sparks, and only a winning tiebreaker against the Liberty, the team’s current chances of making the playoffs are only 38% according to FiveThirtyEight.
