For Carolina’s Week 1 starter, head coach Matt Rhule has chosen between Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold.

The Panthers have decided on their starting quarterback less than three weeks before their season opener against the Browns.

Baker Mayfield will start the team’s season as the team’s quarterback, replacing incumbent Sam Darnold, according to coach Matt Rhule’s announcement on Monday. As a result, Mayfield will make his Carolina debut against his former team.

In the beginning, Rhule said, “we were looking at three things: mastery of the offense, situational football brilliance, and moving the ball and getting guys involved.” That has always been our main priority. In a short period of time, Baker has grown significantly in all three of these categories.

After being traded from Cleveland to Carolina in July, Mayfield arrived there. With the first overall pick in 2018, the Heisman Trophy winner was selected by the Browns. Over the course of the previous four years, Mayfield participated in 60 games for Cleveland, helping the Browns snap a 17-year playoff drought by leading them to the divisional round in 2020.

Mayfield had a completion percentage of 60.5% for 3,010 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 14 games last season. He defeated Darnold, who threw for 2,527 yards, nine touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 12 games during his rookie season with the Panthers.

We’ve believed all along that we need to have a really good quarterback room, and every quarterback needs to be prepared to play, according to Rhule. The majority of teams in this league will use numerous quarterbacks, according to reality. Sam has put in a ton of work, performed admirably for us during training camp, and is prepared to go whenever is necessary.
