The FIFA World Cup’s Group A has been determined, and the host country of Qatar likely feels unlucky after seeing the names drawn from the other three hats.

As is customary for host nations at FIFA World Cup events, Qatar was placed with the top-seeded teams in Pot 1 despite having a ranking of only 51. As is customary, the hosts were placed in Group A as well.

After that, the remaining groups’ teams arrived: Teams from Pot 2 included the Netherlands, who missed the last World Cup but are now competing with a strong team. This is a challenging group for the hosts, as Senegal, the eventual champions of AFCON 2022, are also included. Finally, Pot 4’s selection of Ecuador rounds out the quartet.

According to FIFA rankings, Qatar was placed in a group with the second-hardest Pot 2 team, the toughest Pot 3 team, and the second-hardest Pot 4 team. Brutal!

Group A of the 2018 World Cup Draw

Qatar

Qatar is committed to putting on a spectacular show for soccer fans everywhere during the 2022 World Cup.

After being awarded the right to host the tournament in December 2010, the tiny Gulf nation of fewer than three million people has made significant investments in its national team program. Since then, investing in player training, coaching, and facilities has paid off, with the team rising from 112 to 51 in the FIFA World Ranking. It also led to the first-ever 2019 Asian Cup victory.

With ex-Barcelona youth coach Felix Sanchez at the helm since 2017, Qatar has adopted an offensive, entertaining style of play that will win over fans no matter how far they go in the World Cup.

As of March 2022, the team is ranked 51st in the world by FIFA (March 2022) Across all of Asia, we come in at #6. (Asia) Championships won at the World Cup Appearances (most recent) To what extent: Tournament organizer

Netherlands

Now in his third stint as Netherlands manager, Louis van Gaal will try to use his wealth of experience to lead the team deep into the World Cup for the first time in eight years.

Although they finished third in 2014, they did not advance to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, their fortunes have improved since then thanks to a new generation of talent led by players like Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona and Matthijs de Ligt of Bayern Munich.

The Dutch qualified for the World Cup by topping a group that also included Turkey and Norway, thanks in large part to the defensive prowess of Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, who will be looking to establish himself as the best defender in the world.

Senegal

Senegal had to go through a penalty shootout to secure their spot at Qatar 2022, but they hope to build on their recent success that has already earned them the title of Africa’s best team.

After defeating Egypt in the finals of the African Cup of Nations in February, Aliou Cisse’s team went on to win the tournament for the first time and secure a spot in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by winning the final round of qualifying in the same manner. However, this match was marred by controversy when fans in the stadium aimed laser pointers at Egypt’s players during the penalty shootout in an attempt to intimidate them.

Indeed, the Senegalese hopes will largely rest with the latter man, as their primary attacking threat, and the match proved to be another battle between two former Liverpool teammates, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. In addition to Edouard Mendy, the goalkeeper for Chelsea, they also have access to a number of other top-tier athletes.

Of all the African teams competing in the World Cup, Senegal has the best win percentage.

Ecuador

To avoid a similar fate to the Copa America, where they were eliminated in the quarterfinals after a 3-0 loss to eventual champions Argentina, Gustavo Alfaro’s Ecuador will need to show much more resiliency in this year’s World Cup.

Forward Enner Valencia, Ecuador’s all-time leading scorer with 35 goals, will play a pivotal role in the team’s return to the biggest stage after missing out in 2018.

Pervis Estupinan, a defender for Villarreal, is another talented player, but the team as a whole isn’t particularly strong and might have trouble keeping up with some of the more illustrious teams in the group.

As of March 2022, their FIFA world ranking was No. 46. Since August of 2020, the Argentinean Gustavo Alfaro has been the team’s head coach.

Since August 2020, Gustavo Alfaro (Argentina) Enner Valencia (Fenerbahce, Turkey), Pervis Estupinan (Villarreal, Spain), and Carlos Gruezo (Augsburg, Germany) are three of the best players on their respective teams.
