Cowboys running back Tony Pollard is reportedly getting reps at a new position in training camp after owner Jerry Jones said that running back Ezekiel Elliott “has to be the focus” in the run game.
Even if it means having Pollard work out at slot receiver, as he has at various points in training camp, Dallas is looking for ways to get him more involved in the offense.
According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, offensive assistant Kyle Valero has been working with Pollard individually to develop his skill set as a receiver so that the Cowboys can use both Elliott and Pollard on the field at the same time this season.
When pressed for details, Pollard hinted at honing his pass-catching abilities.
For Pollard, “it’s the little things” like “route-running,” “getting in and out of breaks,” “why we’re running certain plays,” and “what the meaning of those plays are” that make a big difference.
In order to better understand the big picture, we are delving into the specifics of our actions. Those results are a direct result of my efforts to date. That is being noticed both preseason and regular season. Players are taking note of my abilities with the ball and recognizing my growing importance to the team.
The Cowboys’ offense will benefit greatly from having both Pollard and Elliott in the lineup at the same time this season.
Having options out of the backfield and in the slot will be crucial to the Cowboys offense this fall, so it will be interesting to see how often Dallas uses offensive packages with both players present.
