The Porsche Taycan Turbo S has beaten Tesla’s production EV lap record at the Nürburgring by 33 seconds.
Lars Kern, a Porsche development driver, piloted a Taycan fitted with a high-performance package that included newer software for the car’s handling as well as racing-compound tires legal for use on public roads.
Porsche’s lap time is faster than that of the Tesla Model S Plaid, but high-performance EVs like the Lucid Air and Rimac Nevera have not yet completed a timed lap of the Nürburgring.
After seven minutes and 35 seconds, Tesla’s Model S Plaid set in September of 2021, has been beaten by a new production electric vehicle record at the Nürburgring. Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S, driven by Porsche development driver Lars Kern, lowered the previous lap record by two seconds to 7 minutes and 33 seconds for the 12.94-mile circuit. Porsche published a video of the blistering lap with telemetry data showing a 166 mph run on the döttinger höhe straightaway.
Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S is a performance beast on its own, with power figures set at 750 hp and 774 lb-ft of torque in Overboost mode, but the record-holding vehicle wasn’t your average Taycan Turbo S. These wheels and tires were part of a new performance package that included an RS-Spyder-styled 21-inch wheel and Pirelli P Zero Corsa rubber for this unit. Although the tire compound is very similar to a racing compound, the company claims it is still legal for use on public roads. A software update to the 4D Chassis Control system, which monitors and adjusts suspension and braking components in real-time, rounds out the performance kit.
The ‘Ring-winning package is exclusive to the 2023 German model year. Late this year, Porsche will begin offering a performance package that can be installed on currently manufactured vehicles at the company’s Zuffenhausen workshops.
Considering that Porsche’s main office is only a few hours away in Stuttgart, it’s only fitting that the company has reclaimed the Nürburgring record. There is a wide range of different body designs available in the rapidly expanding production performance EV class. This indicates that faster EVs will emerge in the future and pose a threat to Porsche.
From Laguna Seca to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Lucid’s Air has broken lap records, and it is much more powerful than the Taycan. While the Rimac Nevera has not yet completed an official lap of the Nürburgring, its 1914-horsepower drivetrain and aerodynamic bodywork guarantee a lap time on par with that of a supercar. The performance levels and track times of 5,000-pound vehicles like the Taycan or Tesla Model S are a stunning feat of 21st-century engineering, and prove that Porsche won’t keep the record for long. Porsche has shown the way for EV enthusiast enjoyment even as the industry shifts.
