In one game, the Double A second baseman smashed a solo shot, a two-run homer, a three-run homer, and a grand slam to complete the home run cycle. In a Texas League game, the Springfield Cardinals thrashed the Amarillo Sod Poodles 21-4 thanks in large part to the 25-year-old Redmond, who had 11 RBIs and went 5-for-6.
In the history of organized professional baseball, the home run cycle has only been done once, again in the Texas League. In a 1998 game in San Antonio, Tyrone Horne of the Arkansas Travelers was the first to do it. By chance, the Travelers were then a Cardinals affiliate.
Although 18 players have hit four home runs in a single major league game, no MLB player has ever completed a home run cycle. The most recent to do so was J.D. Martinez in 2017 while playing for the Diamondbacks.
Redmond told MLB.com, “I just walked up there wanting to see something high in the zone. “I avoided low objects that I might eventually drive into the earth. My main goal was to raise something that I could lift and perhaps hit out from underneath.
It should be mentioned that the Amarillo ballpark Hodgetown is unquestionably a hitter’s park. It is located at a height of about 3,600 feet above sea level, and the warm Texas climate gives fly balls more distance. Leandro Cedeno, the first baseman for the Sod Poodles, hit a massive 527-foot home run at the stadium earlier this year.
Gardner-Webb was the college team Redmond played for during his third professional season. He is striking. 73 games, 242/.325/.488 with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs.
