Seahawks QB options: Will Geno Smith’s injury, Drew Lock’s COVID prompt Seattle to add another quarterback? With New York Giants QB ready for release, Seattle may be shopping a bit more now

It is understandable that the Seattle Seahawks lost starting quarterback, Will Geno Smith, to a knee injury. So how should they replace him with just Drew Lock?

Toby Newton

The free-agent quarterback market offers few options if the Seahawks are unwilling to trade for another quarterback. The best alternative left is Newton, however it’s unclear how much gas the 2015 NFL MVP still has in the tank.

Before the 2017 season, the Patriots released Newton in favor of Mac Jones, but the Panthers finally signed him. He started five games there, throwing for 684 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions on 54.8 percent of his attempts. The Panthers lost all five of his starts, but he totaled 230 yards and five rushing touchdowns.

Since tearing his rotator cuff in 2016, Newton has repeatedly contended with shoulder and hand issues; as a result, his arm may no longer be strong enough to make him an NFL quarterback. Having said that, the Seahawks could contact Newton if they wanted to add a seasoned, portable quarterback to their quarterback room.

Fitzpatrick, Ryan

Before sustaining a hip injury that ended his season, Fitzpatrick played for Washington in just one-half of a football game in 2021. After spending his 17-year career playing for nine different teams, the 39-year-old retired.

The Seahawks might try to persuade Fitzmagic to come out of retirement and join his tenth different team. He has made 147 career starts and has thrown 223 career touchdown passes against 169 career interceptions.

Fitzpatrick’s hip issue makes it difficult to picture him coming out of retirement, though. He has only two winning records in the 15 years that he has started, and he has never guided a team into the playoffs. He may not be the game-changer that the Seahawks were hoping to find at quarterback.
