Shelby American introduces the Limited GT500 Code Red with 1,300 HP

Shelby dealers finally get to produce the Shelby EXP that they have been waiting for.

It’s great to see a Shelby EXP go into limited production.

Shelby American has taken one of its EXP or experimental cars and made it into production for the first time. Dubbed the Shelby GT500 Code Red, it’s the first twin-turbo limited edition car offered by the company.

Aside from its outward appearance, the Shelby GT500 Code Red is distinguished from the standard model by its upgraded 5.2-liter V8 engine, which is equipped with high-performance components such as a premium intercooled twin-turbo system, new fuel system, and engine management system.

When running on 93 octane fuel, the combined effect of all of these factors is an output of more than 1,000 horsepower (746 kilowatts) and 780 pound-feet (1,058 Newton-meters) of torque. If you fill the tank with E85 Ethanol, the car can make 1,300 horsepower (969 kW) and 1,000 foot-pounds of torque (1,356 Newton-meters).

In addition to the upgraded powertrain, Shelby American also installed a widebody kit, which included brand new wheels, tires, axles, suspension tuning, interior, badges, and a carbon fiber hood, among other things.

Shelby American has made a GT500 Code Red prototype before, so this isn’t the first time. With the help of Nelson’s Racing Engines, the 5.4-liter V8 was redesigned in 2008 to create a twin-turbo Code Red. However, it never made one due to its high cost and extreme nature, making the car not plausible for production. ‘Many of the issues we encountered 14 years ago no longer exist,’ Shelby said.

Shelby’s Always Got a Few Up His Sleeve: In its 60-year history, Shelby American produced only four production models and four experimental concept cars, including the 2008 GT500 Code Red. The other three were the 1968 Green Hornet, the 1967 Super Snake, and the 1967 Little Red. These vehicles are all “test beds for innovation,” and for the first time, due to high demand, one has been put into production.

For 2020–2022, Shelby will produce a total of 10 GT500s at a starting price of $209,995. (excluding the base car). Your purchase of a Code Red automatically enrolls you as a member of Team Shelby, the international organization Carroll Shelby founded in 2008, and records your ownership in the Shelby Registry.
