Reuters: JUBA According to a proclamation delivered on state-run television, South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has dismissed the central bank governor and minister of finance from their positions.
According to the proclamation, Kiir appointed Dier Tong Ngor to replace Agak Acuil Lual as finance minister, and Johnny Ohisa Damian, the first deputy governor of the central bank, will take over for Moses Makur Deng as acting governor.
Their replacements were made without explanation.
It was the second time the bank’s head has been removed when Ngor was chosen as governor in 2020.
In 2021, Lual was appointed finance minister, and on Wednesday, he gave the 2022–2023 budget to the legislature.
Since a civil war broke out in 2013 and drove almost a quarter of its population to migrate to neighboring countries, South Sudan’s economy has been in a rut.
The main economic activity, oil production, has also been hindered by the war, and other industries like agriculture have also seen a decline in output.
