T.O. (Associated Press) — Tennis action from Toronto. Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open after defeating No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 7-5).

Haddad Maia, at age 26, became the first Brazilian woman to reach the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 tournament by earning her first win over a player ranked in the top ten. She had just won the grass tournaments in Nottingham and Birmingham, putting her at a career-best 24th in the world as she arrived in Toronto.

Nine of Swiatek’s double faults were unforced errors, while only one of Haddad Maia’s was.

In the quarterfinals, Haddad Maia will face the Swiss player Belinda Bencic. On Thursday night, Bencic defeated eighth-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain 6-1, 6-3 to extend her winning streak to three matches.

TORONTO (AP) — After a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over No. 14 seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain, No. 4 seed Casper Ruud of Norway moved on to the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open.

No. 1 seed Daniil Medvedev, No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz, and No. 3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas all lost on Wednesday, leaving Ruud as the highest seed still in the singles draw.

After a brief delay due to a thunderstorm in the middle of the afternoon, Rudd was able to hold off Agut.

Ruud’s next opponent will be Felix Auger-Aliassime, the sixth-seeded Canadian tennis player who defeated Cameron Norrie of the United Kingdom 6-3, 6-4. There were 22 aces for Auger-Aliassime.

The eighth-seeded Polish player Hubert Hurkacz won in three sets against the first-seeded Spanish player Albert Ramos-Vinolas, 6-7 (6), 6-2, 7-6. (3). Nick Kyrgios won in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-3, over Alex de Minaur, another Australian.
