How old was Obi-wan Kenobi and Darth Vader when they faced off in each lightsaber fight?

How old was Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi in each of their Lightsaber battles? The Star Wars Skywalker story covered practically the entirety of Anakin Skywalker’s life. Although Obi-Wan and Anakin may have begun as master and pupil and developed a genuine friendship over time, things soured as Anakin grew more and more disenchanted with the Jedi Order and turned to the dark side. As shown in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Anakin may have been the Chosen One, but that didn’t stop him and Obi-Wan from fighting in a deadly duel on the lava planet of Mustafar.

It wasn’t until Star Wars: A New Hope that Anakin and Obi-Wan faced off again on screen, thanks to the events of the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series. But in the 2022 Star Wars spin-off, they ran into one other again, adding a second encounter in the middle of their story. They briefly spoke when they finally came face to face after Mustafar, the former Student and Master. However, as Obi-Wan chose to flee from Anakin rather than engage him in combat, this cannot truly be considered a battle. Fans had anxiously anticipated a committed rematch between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Obi-Wan Kenobi finale. The second confrontation between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi was dramatic despite the fact that viewers knew both would survive thanks to Star Wars mythology.

The two would reappear for their ultimate rematch in Star Wars: A New Hope many in-universe years later (confusingly the first Star Wars movie ever released, hitting theaters all the way back in 1977). But at the time that Darth Vader killed Obi-Wan Kenobi, how old was he? The student Anakin, who had now fully embraced the Dark Side, boasted that he had surpassed his obviously much older opponent, and it was proven to be true. In the end, Vader prevailed, and Obi-Wan submitted to death in order to save Luke Skywalker. The heroic Jedi adventure of Ben Kenobi came to a close, but how old was his adversary and when did he pass away? Here are the ages of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader at the time of each of their battles.

How old are Obi-Wan and Darth Vader in the movies when they fight?

Anakin is 9 years old when Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace takes place. Similar to BC years in the Gregorian calendar, galactic years in Star Wars designated BBY count down to Episode IV’s battle of Yavin (“Before the Battle of Yavin”). According to Star Wars canon, the events of Revenge of the Sith took place in 19 BBY, which indicates that Darth Vader was 22 years old when he took part in the duel that would forever alter his life and body. In comparison, Obi-Wan was considerably older than his apprentice. Obi-Wan was born in the year 57 BBY, as stated in Star Wars: Card Trader. In Revenge of the Sith, he is 38 years old, giving him a significant 15-year edge over his rival, and he makes full use of his experience to secure victory. Given that A New Hope takes place in 0 BBY, which means that Obi-Wan is 57 years old when he dies, it tells a different story when Obi-Wan is older and slower. Darth Vader is 41 years old at this point in the Star Wars timeline.

The ages of their individual actors are also fairly accurate. While Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin in Revenge of the Sith, was 24 years old, David Prowse, who voiced Darth Vader in A New Hope, was 42 years old at the time of its debut. Alec Guiness, who played Obi-Wan in the first Star Wars film, was 63 when it was released in 1977. Ewan McGregor, who played the character in the prequel films, was 34 when Revenge of the Sith debuted in 2005. Both characters ultimately perished too soon. Star Wars Legends had previously established that humans could have a natural lifespan of 100–120 years, and longer if they were highly attuned to the Force. However, even after canon revised this to be in line with real-life expectancies, Obi-Wan was still too young when he passed away.

This is especially true with Darth Vader, who passed away at the age of 45 just four years after his former mentor in Return of the Jedi. He was, however, in far poorer shape than his middle age would imply due to the toll Mustafar had had on his body and the several conflicts he had since. Sebastian Shaw, who was 78 at the time Return of the Jedi’s release, plays him in that movie while he is unmasked because of this. Obi-Wan and Anakin both passed away earlier than they ought to have, but there is no denying the impact they had on the Star Wars universe, which is made all the more astounding by the early ages they accomplished it at.

Ages of Obi-Wan and Darth Vader at the Time of Benji Kenobi Ten years after Revenge of the Sith, in the galactic year 9 BBY, Obi-Wan Kenobi had a duel. Darth Vader, who up until his early twenties was Anakin Skywalker, is a 32-year-old Sith Lord in the height of his evil power. The erstwhile optimist Obi-Wan Kenobi, however, is weaker now that he is 48 years old and attempting to leave behind not only his past but also The Force itself. It’s a distinct situation from either of their other encounters, and it’s maybe the only one in which Vader prevails. In A New Hope, he does kill Obi-Wan, but it’s obvious that this was all part of the Jedi Master’s larger strategy.

The Disney+ series’ middle-aged Kenobi, played by Ewan McGregor, is a different animal. He shows the same fear and degree of rage that lured Anakin to the Dark Side all those years ago, and he very much wants to survive. This is reflected in his fighting style, which until Obi-Wan rediscovers inner peace and, with it, his connection to The Force, is helpless against the powerful Vader. One of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s most intriguing issues is how PTSD affects the Jedi skills of the character. Even though neither of them is too young to be careless nor too old to be slow, their ages in this Star Wars duel should make them more evenly matched. However, Obi-mental Wan’s state in his forties creates a much wider divide in this duel than his age does when facing Darth Vader for the final time in his fifties.
