If you’re a fan of Porsches or endurance racing, you’ll love this restored 962 nose section that was found on Craigslist.

All money raised through auctions on the Bring a Trailer website will be donated to the Brock Yates Memorial Fund to aid in Alzheimer’s disease care and research.

At the recent Pebble Beach auctions, a fully-assembled 1988 962C went for $1.3 million; its nose is thought to have been used in the 1989 12 Hours of Sebring. The average racing fan can now own a genuine piece of racing history.

A Porsche 962 racing car is a piece of automotive history, but not everyone can afford one, and even if they could, what would they do with it? Nostalgic as it may be, vintage racing is an expensive hobby reserved for the wealthy. There won’t be many of us raising our paddles at a Monterey Car Week auction who have Löwenbräu-ferried dreams on Budweiser budgets. But for much less money, you can help a worthy cause while experiencing some of the excitement. The front end of a Porsche 962C that almost certainly competed in the 12 Hours of Sebring is up for auction at Bring a Trailer, which, like Car and Driver, is owned by Hearst Autos.

The section has been restored with care, but the patina and battle damage of long-distance racing are still visible. The current bid is $6500 with 6 days left in the auction.

Compared to the $1.3 million that chassis number 962-139 sold for at the Gooding & Company auction in Monterey this week, that sum is peanuts. The seller is also giving 100% of the money they make from the sale (after paying BaT their fee) to the Brock Yates Memorial Fund, which provides funds for Alzheimer’s care and research.

Brock Yates was the original founder of the Cannonball Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash and One Lap of America, and he was a titan of American automobilia culture as editor at large for Car and Driver for four decades. It’s fitting that the charity in his name is benefiting from the sale of a piece of American endurance racing history.

More importantly, I think he’d enjoy hearing the tale. The seller stumbled upon this nose piece while aimlessly browsing classified ads in his area. It was at first thought to be a replica, but the original markings were still discernible in the paint’s fading. Because of some detective work by the seller and the presence of some peculiar brake ducting, it is now believed that the nose did indeed come from the Havoline-liveried 962C that placed third in the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1989.

The entire car is a typical Porsche racing icon from the era, and it was owned by the late Bruce Leven of Seattle and raced by his Bayside Disposal team. James Weaver and Dominic Dobson raced it at Sebring, and Jochen Mass drove it later that year and in ’89.

The decals and polish on the paint are straight out of 1989, thanks to the seller. Although decorative Hella headlights have been installed, the original scratches and dings from racing have been left intact on the rest of the nose.

It would look great hanging in your office above your collection of vintage racing books or above your 1980s air-cooled Porsche 911 in the garage. The purchase of a vintage racing Porsche 962 may be out of reach. The good news is that you can participate. As of this coming Friday, August 26th, the auction will come to a close.
