Vitamin D Supplement Could Be An Effective Treatment For Depression

According to a recent meta-analysis published in the journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, vitamin D supplementation may help alleviate the signs and symptoms of clinical depression. An multinational team of researchers examined 41 papers examining the effectiveness of vitamin D in reducing depressive symptoms in adults through randomized placebo-controlled trials in order to better understand the relationship between depression and vitamin D supplementation (via Insider).

The evaluation and analysis revealed that vitamin D pills were often more helpful than the placebo at easing the symptoms of depression. A tiny minority of adults with no known underlying illnesses or a clinical depression diagnosis, however, preferred the placebo over the supplements (per recent study). Researchers still think the meta-analysis is promising in spite of this. Tuomas Mikola, a PhD candidate at the University of Eastern Finland and the study’s principal author, said that the results “will motivate additional, high-level clinical trials in patients with depression to shed further light on the potential function of vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of depression” (per Insider).

What Depression Relief Could Vitamin D Supplements Provide?

But how precisely may vitamin D pills possibly ease depressive symptoms? It appears that the solution may be related to inflammation (via Medical News Today). Dr. Monique Aucoin, a senior research fellow at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and a naturopathic physician, claims that vitamin D supplementation may help lower inflammation in the body, which may be linked to mental health conditions.

According to Aucoin, the precise process by which vitamin D affects the brain and mental health is not fully understood. She stated, “There is evidence that vitamin D may balance or alter immune system components involved in inflammation. It is currently unknown if vitamin D supplementation could be helpful in treating depression. While delivering vitamin D supplements to patients who are already receiving treatment for their depression poses no significant risks, according to Aucoin, more research is still required before any firm conclusions can be made about vitamin D’s capacity to treat depression on its own.
