The pressure is once again mounting on Manchester United, so Saturday’s match between Brentford and the Red Devils in west London should be fantastic (see live, 12:30pm ET on NBC and online via NBCSports.com).

BRENTFORD vs. MANCHESTER UNITED LIVE STREAM

The 2-1 loss at home to Brighton, Erik ten Hag’s first Premier League setback as United’s manager, exposed every problem the Dutchman is working to fix. United’s defense was all over the place, their midfield lacked imagination, and their attack lacked finesse. There is a lot to work out when introducing a new possession-based style and recruiting new players who fit that system.

Brentford is still fighting, as Thomas Frank’s team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to draw at Leicester City on the opening weekend of the season. The Bees, who are still operating under the radar, have made yet more astute additions this summer and are determined to avoid a sophomore collapse this season.

To bolster their team, Brentford once again made wise hiring decisions by bringing in Mikkel Damsgaard, Keane Lewis-Potter, and Aaron Hickey. Yes, it was a shock to lose Christian Eriksen (who is currently at Manchester United), but Thomas Frank has built a really solid team. Brentford is anxious to show they were more than just a one-season surprise in the Premier League, and last season, their 13th-place finish ultimately depended on them getting out to a quick start this year. The Bees have previously caused issues for teams like Arsenal, Tottenham, and Liverpool at home, and they will try to do the same against United, even though they did suffer significant losses to United twice last season.

It might be challenging to keep up with all of the narratives that are always circulating about Manchester United. And the most of them are negative. It’s still a bit of a mess, with things like Cristiano Ronaldo wanting to go but being forced to stay, Erik ten Hag losing his first game as manager, the failed attempts to recruit Marko Arnautovic (reported fan unrest supposedly put that deal in jeopardy), and so on. Erik ten Hag didn’t see many encouraging signs on the field because Brighton overwhelmed his team and his team deserved to lose their first game. Their defense, namely whether or not captain Harry Maguire will start with Raphael Varane waiting in the wings, is one of the main unanswered questions.

Furthermore, it appears that United’s pursuit of Frenkie de Jong throughout the summer has been ineffective, therefore the player United now wants to sign is Adrien Rabiot in order to control the pace of their play from midfield. Erik ten Hag’s early years as manager do not appear to be going to be easy, and this trip to Brentford has a red flag blazing all over it. Additionally, it appears like 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo will return to the starting lineup in an effort to inspire United with a bit of his signature magic.

Bryan Mbuemo and Ivan Toney, who recently scored at Leicester, are two players to keep an eye on in form. The latter continues to look like a real handful. Watch out for Keane Lewis-Potter, a recent acquisition who appears to be a true talent.

No one at United is in good shape, at least not after their opening match, although players like Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford will be aiming to carry over some of their strong preseason form into the Premier League.

Brentford roster options, injuries, and team news

Due to the absence of both center backs Kristoffer Ajer and Ethan Pinnock, the Bees are experiencing some defensive issues. Sergi Canos is also sidelined due to a hamstring problem.

News about Manchester United, injuries, and possible lineups

Brandon Williams is out, but Anthony Martial might be able to play after sustaining a knee injury. An ankle sprain is also bothering Facundo Pellistri.
