The premiere of House of the Dragon, the first in a planned series of Game of Thrones spin-offs, is quickly approaching.

Matt Smith, Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, and others are among the series’ ensemble cast.

When exactly in history does the new HBO series, which serves as a prequel to the wildly popular Game of Thrones, take place?

Unlike Game of Thrones, which is set in the present day, House of the Dragon is set in the ancient Orient, two hundred years before the

The events of House of the Dragon take place around the year 103 A.C., roughly 200 years before the events of Thrones.

Dates in Westeros are described as “Before Conquest” (BC) or “After Conquest” (AD), which is similar to the Before Christ and Anno Domini used in our world (AC).

This conquest took place when Daenerys’ ancestor Aegon used his dragons to unite the seven kingdoms of Westeros under his rule.

With David Tennant’s son Ty Tennant being considered for the role of Aegon, we can expect the show to feature flashbacks.

Officially, “The prequel series finds the Targaryen dynasty at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke,” reads the synopsis for House of the Dragon. Real and fictional empires alike usually fall from such heights. When King Viserys Targaryen, almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, names his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne, he goes against a century of tradition. However, when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division and friction are sown across the realm.

How does this relate to the popular HBO series?

After 280 years on the throne, Robert Baratheon of House Baratheon and Aerys II of House Stark helped depose the Targaryens. The events of Game of Thrones begin 18 years later, though there are some inconsistencies with the book’s timeline.

Robert, played by Mark Addy, rebelled against King Aerys II Targaryen, also known as “The Mad King,” after the latter’s son Rhaegar allegedly kidnapped Robert’s betrothed, Lyanna Stark.

Robert married Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) after his victory and Lyanna’s death to form an alliance with House Lannister.

At the same time, Viserys and Daenerys, Aerys’s remaining heirs, fled to Essos in an effort to rally supporters and retake the Iron Throne.

The chaos that ensues is thus our entry into the first series.

This Sunday, August 21st, at 9pm, HBO will premiere House of the Dragon. After that, it will be accessible via HBO Max.

Premiering on Sky at 2 a.m. on Monday, August 22nd, for British audiences. After the initial airing, the episode will be available to stream on Sky and NOW until the following Monday at 9 p.m.
